The mottled appearance comes from a polychrome print transfer (Tufts Catalog, footnote 111, p.38). Slobodkina would take a heavy imprint on a wet cloth and then lay it down on the gesso panel and go over it with a hot iron (Slobodkina Interview, March 26, 1991, Tape II, Side I).
