At age 91 Esphyr Slobodkina created this work for an exhibition of the Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors at Fordham University for their project “New York Subways,” March 2000. The Subway Abstraction is Slobodkina’s last fully abstract collage. Of note is Slobodkina’s abstract lion (her icon for the New York Public Library) placed in the upper right-hand corner of the work over the downward black triangle (tunnel?) angling away below the building.
