Esphyr Slobodkina: Journey into Abstraction, Kraushaar Galleries, October 1-30, 2004

Esphyr had a process she used quite frequently. She would make sketches on tissue paper until she had a composition she felt was worthy of further development. Next she would apply graphite to the back of the sheet using a pencil. By baring down on the lines with a pencil or pen she would transfer her line to artist board. After enhancing the line she would then paint the composition with gouache paints. This painting was born of this process. A final oil painting was made from this gouache at a larger scale. Unfortunately the oil was lost in a fire. This gouache is the only record that remains of this composition from that period. Esphyr made a replica of the oil in 1996, and it hangs in the galleries at Slobodkina House on permanent display.
